Printer User Manual | Alice Guarnieri

- Talk (free entry) - Friday 9 December 2022, 6pm (registration, keynote speech, debate, and free drinks)

- Workshop from Saturday 10 to Sunday 11 December, all day (group activities, working sessions, discussions, socialising and networking).

When we buy a home printer, we are only purchasing the license to use it. We may not modify the software, and we can hence do very standardized and limited actions with it. Everything is designed to an end: give us the fastest and most accurate printing output. For example, we can’t decide to print with only two colours if the others run out, because the printer’s chip recognizes when it’s time to insert a new cartridge. In this talk, we investigate the limits of a home inkjet printer, exploring the visual potential of the tool, to produce unique prints in the series.

To do this, each participant is asked to design an action to hack the hardware, to achieve unexpected visual effects.

The starting point for making prints are landscape images, or images that represent ideal scenarios.

The workshop output is a collective user manual, a contradictory collection of new guidelines, designed to push the expressive boundaries of the tool.
